SACRAMENTO, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger gave many California state employees three-day weekends twice a month Friday, in an order aimed at closing the state's budget gap.
The order requires agencies to close on the first and third Fridays of each month, the Los Angeles Times reported. Prisons and other state institutions providing essential services would have to work out a schedule to furlough employees to cut costs, the newspaper said.
The order takes effect Feb. 6.
Schwarzenegger's staff estimates the furloughs and closings will save the state about 9 percent of its payroll. The administration estimates that California's budget gap will grow to $41.6 billion by mid-2010, and the governor and Democratic leaders in the legislature have been unable to agree on a plan to bring the budget into balance.
Three unions have filed a lawsuit against the furlough plan.
