BANGKOK, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Thailand announced Tuesday it was blocking Web sites deemed by the government to be insulting of King Bhumipol.
The move announced by the Thai information minister could get offenders up to 15 years in prison.
The Daily Telegraph newspaper said King Bhumipol is considered to be strictly a ceremonial figure by the Thai government, which bristles at suggestions that the monarch is involved in political affairs.
Bhumipol's role in Thailand has been a center of controversy amid the long running political upheaval taking place in the country. Anti-government protesters have contended that they were acting to protect the monarchy.
