TOULOUSE, France, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Authorities say 12 people escaped unharmed when a car containing a gasoline bomb rammed a synagogue in Toulouse, France.
The attack came Monday as French officials met with Jewish and Muslim leaders throughout France to urge calm during the clash between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants in Gaza, the BBC reported Tuesday.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy was in the Middle East trying to negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza.
Police said the car bomb damaged a door to the synagogue and that a second car containing unused gasoline bombs was found in the neighborhood, the BBC reported. No one has been arrested.
Anti-semitic violence in France has increased since 2002 when Israel began large-scale military operations in the West Bank, the BBC reported, adding many French Jews have emigrated to Israel because of intimidation and violence in France.
