Pope names new Detroit archbishop

DETROIT, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Pope Benedict XVI has named Bishop Allen Henry Vigneron of California as the new Roman Catholic archbishop of Detroit.

Vigneron, a native of Mt. Clemens, Mich., is to replace retiring Cardinal Adam Maida, The Detroit Free Press reported Monday.

Vigneron, 60, who has been serving as bishop in Oakland, Calif., will serve 1.4 million Roman Catholics in six counties in greater Detroit.

He is to be installed Jan. 28 at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Detroit.

Before serving in California, Vigneron was auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Detroit. He also was president of Sacred Heart Major Seminary and served in the Administrative Section of the Vatican Secretariat of State in Rome, and as an associate pastor at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in Harper Woods, Mich.
