Donations pour in to troubled college

ATLANTA, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- The son of an alumna contributed $100 in quarters Saturday to Morris Brown College as supporters rallied around the historically black school in Atlanta.

Terrence McKenzie, 13, a student at Shamrock Middle School, was one of many people to show up for a rally for the financially troubled school, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. His mother, Miranda, said he decided to empty his change jar when he learned she was giving Morris Brown $1,000.

"Because my mom really cares about Morris Brown," Terrence said was his reason.

Morris Brown, founded in 1881 by former slaves, narrowly escaped closing Friday. The city shut off the water after the end of the fall semester because of unpaid bills, but a judge ordered restoration as long as the college paid $100,000 of its $380,000 debt by the end of the day and most of the rest in mid-February.

Acting President Stanley Pritchett Sr. acknowledged other problems. A classroom building and art gallery are scheduled to be auctioned this week unless he can negotiate a postponement.

The college went through a financial scandal several years ago which led the United Negro College Fund to cut off support.
