Rocket attacks on Israel injure 3

ASHKELON, Israel, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Three people suffered light wounds Friday after rockets fired from the Gaza Strip struck parts of Israel, including the city of Ashkelon, the military says.

The Israeli military said the rocket attacks struck parts of Ashkelon, the Sdot Negev Regional Council and the Eshkol Regional Council, Ynetnews reported.

A man suffered minor shrapnel injuries when an Ashkelon home took a direct hit from one of the rockets. Two women also suffered minor wounds in the attack, while an unspecified number of other residents suffered shock.

The attacks on the two regional councils did result in any injuries but one Eshkol building did suffer significant damage from a rocket strike.

Ynetnews said the military wing of Hamas immediately claimed responsibility for the cross-border rocket attack.

The Israeli military said in response to the attack, Israeli jets located the suspected source of the Ashkelon rocket assault and destroyed the launching pads.
