AMERY, Wis., Jan. 2 (UPI) -- A Minnesota man, working with a friend, allegedly stole $250,000 from his grandfather, going on a two-day spending spree before police caught up with them.
Andrew Selvig, 18, of Taylors Falls and Samuel Durkot, 19, of Cambridge, Minn., spent a lot of the money on presents, including cars, police said. Durkot's father said he was proud of his son because he paid off many of his creditors.
"It was Christmastime. ... They blazed quite a trail," Sgt. Roy Joy of the Polk County, Wis., sheriff's office told the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
The two told their families they had won the money at a casino, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported. In fact, they spent the night of Christmas Eve with Selvig's grandparents in Amery, Wis., and removed the cash from a safe, police charge.
Selvig was arrested Sunday at his father's house. Durkot was picked up Tuesday in Kentucky, as he traveled to Florida, allegedly with a teenage runaway.
