OTTAWA, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Canadian Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean said in her New Year's message 2008 was troubling and 2009 would require more solidarity among countries.
Jean said 2008 was closing with a global economic recession, Canada's Parliament suspended until January in an unprecedented political battle among the minority Conservatives and three opposition parties, and the Canadian military death toll in Afghanistan now at 106.
The message released in Ottawa called for "greater solidarity" at all levels of society and in international relations.
"The 'fend for yourself' mentality has no place in an interdependent world, where the decisions of some have a profound impact on the lives of others; where our fates are inextricably linked," Jean said. "Given the magnitude of the challenges before us, the time has come for us to invent new ways of living together. It is up to us to seize that opportunity."
