FAIRFAX, Va., Dec. 29 (UPI) -- The divorce rate among members of the U.S. Army and Marines increased this year, leading to efforts aimed at reducing the trend, an official says.
Kelly Hruska, National Military Family Association deputy director of governmental relations, said the divorce rate increases in the armed services branches during the 2008 fiscal year may have been due to lengthy troop deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq, The Beauford (S.C.) Gazette said Monday.
"The operational tempo is extremely high," the official from the Virginia nonprofit group said. "Few people were surprised by this news. I think we would have been surprised if divorce rates were declining."
The U.S. Defense Department said during the 2008 fiscal year, the divorce rate among married U.S. Marines increased to 3.7 percent from 2007's 3.3 percent.
Married members of the U.S. Army saw a slightly lower rate increase as 3.5 percent of the 287,000 troops were divorced compared with a 2007 rate of 3.3 percent.
Hruska praised the branches' creation of programs aimed at helping strengthen troops' marriages but expressed concern that the programs weren't mandatory for married personnel, the Gazette reported.
