GALLIVARE, Sweden, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- A pack of Norwegian elkhounds is credited with saving an elderly Swedish man from an angry elk.
The 75-year-old man was trying to shoo the elk from his yard in Gallivare in northern Sweden when it attacked him Saturday night, the Swedish news agency tt reported Sunday.
The man suffered a head wound but could have been more seriously injured were it not for the elkhounds who escaped from a nearby pen and chased the elk into the woods, said police spokesman Rolf Hamstig, adding the man was treated at a local hospital and returned home.
Wildlife officials said it was unusual for elks to be so violent. Police were to decide Sunday whether to track the animal and kill it, Hamstig said.
