PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, Russia, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- A powerful winter storm struck the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia Saturday, disrupting communication with the mainland.
Schools in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the region's major city, were closed for the day, ITAR-TASS reported. Parents were urged to keep children at home.
The storm, described as a cyclone, moved westward after passing north of Japan.
The weather service reported that winds were expected to strengthen and snow fall get heavier through the day. Forecasters said the risk of avalanches in the mountains was high.
The airport at Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky was closed. Any vessels in port on the peninsula were not putting out to sea.
