KATHMANDU, Nepal, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Scores of journalists in Nepal carried out protests Saturday to oppose a series of media attacks focused on freedom of the press, a group says.
The Federation of Nepalese Journalists said journalists gathered together in cities such as Kathmandu to show solidarity in their quest for press freedoms in Nepal, eKantipur reported.
Federation President Dharmendra Jha said at the capital protest that the Nepalese government has allegedly done little to protect journalists from the ongoing attacks.
Narayan Wagle of Editors' Alliance suggested the spate of attacks were coordinated as part of a Maoist policy aimed at containing dissent.
He too called on government officials to increase their response to the attacks, which include the beating of an Avenues Television journalist Tuesday.
Journalists taking part in Saturday's protests wore black cloths over their mouths, a day after many wore black armbands to support the federation's press freedom movement, eKantipur reported.
