TOKYO, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- About 5,000 Japanese teachers took sick leave for mental disorders during fiscal 2007, marking a threefold increase from a decade ago, a report revealed.
An Education Ministry report found nearly 62 percent of the 8,069 teachers and school workers who took sick leave during the period did so for mental conditions, Asahi Shimbun reported Saturday.
The newspaper reported the number of teachers taking sick leave for mental disorders, including depression, has steadily grown for 15 consecutive years.
"Teachers often bear the expectations directed toward the school on their own shoulders and end up exceeding their limits before finally seeking medical attention," said Kaoruko Magane, director of the psychiatry and neurology division at the Sanraku Hospital of the Mutual Aid Association for Tokyo Metropolitan Teachers and Officials.
"It is no overstatement to say that the school education system itself would fall into a crisis if society fails to give support (to teachers)," Magane was quoted as saying.
