CHICAGO, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Chicago's Michigan Avenue bridge is to get new decorative handrails in a style reminiscent of a 1920s pattern, an official says.
Chicago Transportation Department spokesman Brian Steele said in addition to the Beaux Arts pattern handrails, the $3.5 million bridge project will include the installation of non-skid fiberglass decking in lieu of sidewalks, the Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.
"This is something that has been planned for at least a couple of years," Steele said, adding that the construction will take place in winter when the bridge sees less traffic.
Construction on the bridge will bring about some pedestrian traffic woes for Chicagoans though, Steele warned.
At least one side of the bridge will be closed at any given time during the predicted six-month period the makeover will take.
Steele told the Tribune the design changes come four years after a polyurethane non-skid surface was added to its metal deck plates.
"Because of the high traffic on that bridge, it has deteriorated," he said.
