KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Dec. 26 (UPI) -- The amount of coal ash that spilled from a breached containment pond in Tennessee was three times the original estimate, the Tennessee Valley Authority reports.

The TVA conducted an aerial survey Tuesday but did not release the results until Thursday, The New York Times reported.

The spill occurred at the Kingston Fossil Plant about 40 miles west of Knoxville on the banks of the Emory River. It affected a section of Roane County, including a dozen houses, three of which have been declared uninhabitable.

After the containing wall broke, officials estimated the size of the spill at 1.7 million cubic yards of wet coal ash. After the survey, the estimate was increased to 5.4 million cubic yards, enough to cover 3,000 acres with a one-foot layer of ash.

Angela Spurgeon was one of those left with property buried in ash.

"That's scary to know that they can be off by that much," she said. "I don't think it was intentional, but it upsets me to know that a number was given of what the pond could hold, and the number now is more than double of what the pond actually held."
