OCOEE, Fla., Dec. 25 (UPI) -- A 91-year-old man says he used a 38-caliber revolver to scare off two home invaders who had threatened his wife in their home near Ocoee, Fla.
Charles Johnson said after the unidentified men threatened to hurt his wife of 72 years, Berlie Mae, he reacted by arming himself and chasing off the criminals, the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel said Thursday.
Berlie Mae told the newspaper if not for her husband's brave actions Tuesday afternoon, she likely would have been killed by the home invader who held a gun to her head.
"It's terrible. You don't know what (they're) going to do. ...," she said, temporarily unable to discuss the traumatic event. "I can't hold up. My nerves are shot. He'd probably have killed me."
Johnson said his decision to put his life at risk and attempt to rescue his wife was pure instinct based on his love for Berlie Mae.
"You don't think, man. You do what you have to do," the senior citizen told the Sentinel.
"She's all I've got to live for … Why would I want to live," he added.
