WASHINGTON, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Most Americans favor an economic stimulus package -- even with an $800 billion price tag -- but not necessarily bigger government, a CNN poll indicates.

Fifty-six percent of those queried in the CNN-Opinion Research Corp. survey said they favored the stimulus package President-elect Barack Obama is proposing, while 42 percent were opposed, CNN reported.

Obama is pushing Congress to pass the plan soon after he's inaugurated Jan. 20 to help jump start the nation's faltering economy.

The poll released Tuesday also indicated two-thirds of the public said the stimulus package will revive the economy, while 31 percent said it the package wouldn't help much or at all.

Americans were split on whether they'd like more government regulation of business and industry, CNN reported. Thirty-nine percent said there was too much government involvement, while another 39 percent said there was too little. The amount of government involvement was just right for 20 percent of those surveyed.

The CNN-Opinion Research Corp. poll was conducted by telephone Friday through Sunday with 1,013 adults. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.
