KATHMANDU, Nepal, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Many Nepalese newspapers protested an attack by Maoist union activists on a publishing company by printing papers with blank pages Tuesday.

Some of the empty spaces had black borders, Voice of America reported.

On Sunday, Himal Media, which publishes the Nepali Times, was stormed by dozens of activists who allegedly attacked both property and people, causing some injuries. They were protesting the firing of Maoist employees.

The Maoists fought a long civil war in Nepal, which ended with a political settlement. The group now heads the government.

"We saw the attack as an attack on press freedom, on the values of democracy for which we fought, the media has fought, along with civil society and the democratic parties in the past ... and now the threat

comes from an elected Maoist government, and we thought we had to make a strong statement," said Kunda Dixit, editor of the Nepali Times.

Prime Minister Prachanda denied any government involvement on the attack on Himal Media. He promised a full investigation.
