Gunman steals presents from under tree

SYDNEY, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- An armed man and a woman forced their way into an Australian couple's home Tuesday and stole the wrapped presents under the Christmas tree, police said.

The man backed his car into the attached garage, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. He and his accomplice loaded the station wagon with a television, sewing machine, video camera, jewelry and the presents.

The couple, both 61, told police they were watching television Tuesday evening when they heard a knock on the door. When the husband opened the door, the thief pointed a gun at him and forced his way inside.

"This would be a terrifying experience at any time, but to happen on the eve of Christmas has been especially traumatizing," said Police Inspector Gary Shoobridge, asking the public to help solving what he called a "heartless crime."
