DALE CITY, Va., Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Prosecutors say they'll seek to try a 17-year-old as an adult in the Dale City, Va., killings of a woman known as "Super Mom" and her 19-year-old son.
The teenage suspect, who lived in the same neighborhood, has been charged with fatally shooting Jean C. Smith, 39, and her son, James M. Smith, in their home Friday.
Police, in comments Sunday, alleged the teenage suspect intended to burglarize the Smith home. He has been charged as a juvenile on counts of burglary and murder while prosecutors seek to have him charged as an adult, The Washington Post reported Monday.
Jean Smith was known as a "Super Mom" at C.D. Hylton High School, where she was heavily involved in volunteer activities, the Post reported, noting her son, James, was a 2007 graduate of the school.
A sign outside the school Sunday read "Jean and Jim Smith We Miss You Already."
