BARNSTABLE, Mass., Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Police in Sandwich, Mass., say it appears a 62-year-old man died of carbon monoxide poisoning after his chimney was clogged by a raccoon.
Police said the unidentified man's body was found last weekend in his area home when officers responded to a call of concern regarding the man's well-being, the Cape Cod (Mass.) Times said Monday.
A fire official investigating the home Sunday found a carbon monoxide level of 1,100 parts per million, an extremely high reading for a residential home.
A further investigation of the man's home uncovered a dead raccoon in the house's chimney flue, the Times said. The animal apparently died after crawling into the furnace exhaust and its body blocked the deadly fumes from escaping the property, causing a major buildup of carbon monoxide.
Fire officials told the Times the home had contained no smoke or carbon monoxide detectors.
