INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- A state lawmaker in Indiana says he wants to impose a moratorium on charter schools in the state and now has the support of Indianapolis Public Schools.
State Rep. Vernon G. Smith said with an Indiana University study's results indicating that charter school students test nearly identical to other school district students, there appears to be no need for charter institutions, The Indianapolis Star said Monday.
"If they're doing the same thing as traditional schools and making no difference, why should we be fracturing our school corporations?" Smith asked. "If they're achieving, I'll shut up."
The study found that charter school students and students at more traditional cites passed the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress-Plus at nearly the same rate.
But M. Karega Rausch, the director of charter schools for Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, maintains charter schools do significantly impact an individual student's ability to learn.
"If you look at individual student growth, students at mayor-sponsored charter schools far outpace students around Indiana and around the country," the official told the Star.
