REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec. 22 (UPI) -- A. Carl Kotchian, the former president of Lockheed Aircraft whose bribery admission sparked political turmoil, has died in California, his son says.

Kotchian, 94, had been ill with ailments related to aging and died Dec. 14 at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, Calif., his son Robert Kotchian told Monday's Los Angeles Times.

After a stellar career with the aerospace company in which he oversaw the development of many iconic aircraft, Kotchian admitted to paying millions of dollars in bribes to foreign government officials, leading to the imprisonment of Japan's prime minister in the 1970s, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

The executive's testimony before a U.S. Senate committee in 1976 helped institute sweeping reforms and the creation of new laws against U.S. companies paying off foreign government officials, the newspaper said.

Robert Kotchian said he never sensed that his father had any regrets or remorse about the payoffs, explaining to the Times, "He felt he did the right thing for the good of the company. He felt that if he didn't do it, somebody else would. I think he was stuck between a rock and a hard place."
