NEW YORK, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Three construction supervisors expected to be charged in the deaths of two New York firefighters have surrendered to authorities, sources say.
Second-degree manslaughter and other charges will be filed against the three as well as a subcontractor in connection with an August 2007 incident in two city firefighters died while battling a smoky blaze at the Deutsche Bank Building in New York's Lower Manhattan, The New York Times quoted unnamed sources saying Monday.
The building had been damaged in the Sept. 11, 2001, World Trade Center attacks. Numerous failures by the city in safeguarding the building were probed, and prosecutors have singled out four individuals for charges, the Times said. The charges were expected to be announced at a news conference Monday by Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau.
Morganthau had explored holding the city of New York itself criminally liable in the emotional case, in which the 41-story Deutsche Bank Building caught fire while undergoing repairs. An investigation revealed a series of missteps and safety violations by city officials, state development officials, contractors and others preceding the fire, causing outrage among the firefighters' families, the newspaper said.
