SAN LUIS, Colo., Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Recovery crews Monday climbed the Colorado mountainside where two people died after their twin-engine aircraft crashed into Vermejo Peak.
The names of the two people aboard the aircraft were not released but officials did say the flight originated in Canada and had been missing since dropping off Federal Aviation Administration radar over the Sangre de Cristo mountains about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, The Denver Post reported.
The plane, a Beech Baron, crashed into the 13,723-foot Vermejo Peak, about 38 miles west of Trinidad, Colo., officials said, adding that search-and-rescue crews aboard Sno-Cats were approaching the crash site on trails from Las Animas County.
They were expected to reach the mountainside late Monday afternoon, Sgt. James Chavez of the Costilla County Sheriff's Department told the Post, battling high winds and avalanche danger to reach the bodies.
