KINGSTON, Tenn., Dec. 22 (UPI) -- As many as 15 homes were damaged when a dike on an ash retention pond at a Tennessee Valley Authority power plant gave way, officials said Monday.
Two people had to be rescued from a partially collapsed house in the neighborhood near the pond in Roane County, Tenn., but no one was injured, TVA spokesperson Gil Francis told WVLT-TV, Knoxville, Tenn.
He said the pond at the TVA Kingston Fossil Plant held more than 40 acres of water and ash, and that when the dike broke, it resulted in an "ash slide" at around 12:40 a.m. Monday morning.
"We've moved from a rescue operation to a recovery operation," Tennessee Emergency Management Agency spokesperson Jeremy Heidt told WVLT-TV. "All people are accounted for, there are no major injuries, and no fatalities."
"We do believe the excess December rains and freezing and unfreezing weather may have had something to do with it, but we'll get a closer assessment at daybreak," Francis told reporters.
