SHANGHAI, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- A senior Communist Party of China leader said Saturday his country is prepared to help Taiwan through the ongoing economic crisis.
Jia Qinglin, National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference chairman, said China was fully prepared to offer economic assistance to Taiwan if the island's government asks for help, China's state-run news agency, Xinhua, reported.
"If the worsening world economic situation continues and the Taiwan side asks for help to solve economic difficulties, the mainland is willing to offer assistance with utmost efforts," Jia said during the 4th Cross-Straits Economic, Trade and Cultural Forum.
He said the proposed Chinese aid measures would help both China and Taiwan's economies if applied, Xinhua reported.
"The measures will provide new trade and investment opportunities for Taiwan businessmen," Jia said.
According to Jia, officials from China and Taiwan, which has staved off domination by the Communist mainland since 1949, should also work to further industrial and financial cooperation during the worldwide economic recession.
