Police: 'Southside Slayer' likely four men

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- At least four men are likely responsible for the deaths of up to 80 women in Los Angeles attributed to the so-called "Southside Slayer," police said.

Police and prosecutors say that with prime "Southside Slayer" suspect Michael Hughes serving a life prison sentence, several other men likely were involved grisly deaths attributed to the 1980s and 1990s serial killer, ABC News reported Friday.

"It was assumed that one guy was doing the whole thing. If you think about sheer number of women being killed, it would have been very hard for one person to kill all of them and not ever be caught at the scene," Deputy District Attorney Bobby Grace said.

Hughes was convicted in 1998 for the murders of four women and faces charges in four killings that took place between 1986 and 1993.

Chester Turner was executed in 2007 for 10 homicides tied to the serial murders, while Louis Craine was convicted and died in prison for four similar homicides.

Los Angeles Police Department Det. Paul Coulter told ABC the "Southside Slayer" routinely targeted women in the Los Angeles area who were prostitutes and crack cocaine addicts.
