CHICAGO, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling this year, he is considering less comprehensive gun control laws for his city.

Daley said this week that with the nation's top court ruling against Washington's stringent handgun ban, he is eyeing a relaxation of Chicago's current ban as a response, the Chicago Tribune said Thursday.

The National Rifle Association had attempted to apply the Washington ruling to Chicago's stringent handgun regulations, but U.S. District Judge Milton Shadur rejected that motion.

However, with the firearm advocacy group appealing that ruling, Daley has scheduled a conference for next month in which handguns and related violence will be discussed.

A city Law Department spokeswoman echoed Daley's comments Thursday regarding possible changes to the city's current gun laws.

"We intend to continue enforcing our ordinance and look to other cities and states in terms of what they do on gun control," spokeswoman Jennifer Hoyle told the Tribune.
