Scores still without power in New England

BOSTON, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- State officials and utility executives in New England admit they are in uncharted waters as they struggle to repair damage from a massive ice storm.

Thousands of residents of the region still had no electricity Wednesday nearly a week after a major winter storm brought down not only power lines but utility poles and transmission towers as well.

"This was an incredibly unique event," Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency spokesman Peter Judge told the Boston Globe. "There are a lot of things to evaluate. We're not even halfway through this."

Thousands of customers are having their lights go back on every day, however thousands more are still waiting in hotels and emergency shelters.

"It's really horrible -- just hard to believe it could take this long," Doris Poindexter, 58, of Townsend, Mass., told the Globe as she and her family checked into another hotel. "I can't tell you how frustrating this is."
