OSHAWA, Ontario, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Only 11 animals in a Canadian Humane Society shelter east of Toronto could be saved from a fire that killed 180 cats, firefighters said Wednesday.
Firefighters in Oshawa, east of Toronto, received an alarm shortly after 2 a.m. and found the Durham Humane Society building engulfed in flames, chief fire prevention officer Susan King told the Toronto Star.
"Fire personnel entered the building and handed rescued animals to police," she said.
Nine dogs and two cats were rescued, but the other 180 cats died of smoke inhalation, CTV News reported.
The animals were kept in police cars until they could be transferred to an animal hospital in neighboring Whitby, the report said.
The Toronto Humane Society issued a statement saying it had sent food, supplies and other necessities to the animals and would assist in finding them homes.
There were no injuries among firefighters, who estimated damage to the facility at $250,000.
The cause of the fire was under investigation, officials said.
