EL-FASHER, Sudan, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- Renewed tribal fighting in Sudan's Darfur region in recent days has left scores of people dead, authorities said Monday.
Officials with the peacekeeping mission in the African nation say 70-150 fatalities were counted in fighting between Fallata and Habaniya tribes in South Darfur Thursday, the Sudan Tribune reported. The officials said 400-500 gun-toting members of the Fallata and Salamat tribes attacked the Habaniya tribe in Wad Hajam, about 30 miles west of Buram, ransacking the village and displacing more than 5,000 people.
That attack allegedly was in retaliation for a Dec. 4 Habaniya assault on Tomat village in which 20 people died.
The Habanyia and Fallata tribes are considered government allies who have waged attacks against civilians to quell the rebellion in Darfur, the Tribune said.
