HOLLAND, Mich., Dec. 15 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., said Monday he will not seek a 10th term in Congress in 2010.

Hoekstra, who represents Michigan's 2nd Congressional District, said has "one of the best jobs in the world," but it might be time for a change, the Holland (Mich.) Sentinel reported.

Jack Holmes, professor of political science at Hope College, said he was "surprised" to hear that Hoekstra planned to leave Congress.

"Pete's been very effective at what he's done," he said.

There is widespread speculation the congressman may run for governor in 2010.

Other possible Republican candidates for governor include Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land and Attorney General Mike Cox. Lt. Gov. John Cherry is considered a possible Democratic contender.

"I think (Hoekstra) would be a strong candidate should he decide to do that," Holmes said. "I think the challenge is to get to the entire state. I know he's been much more active in the entire state in recent years."
