Va. district picks its first black elector

RICHMOND, Va., Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Virginia's 1st Congressional District is sending its first black representative to the Electoral College to cast his vote for the first black U.S. president.

Christia Rey, a College of William and Mary student and former U.S. Army captain, is one of 13 presidential electors representing Virginia's Democratic Party in Richmond, Va., the Newport News, Va.) Daily Press reported Sunday.

On Monday, Rey will be a part of the exercise to officially select the state's choice for president and vice president.

This summer, Rey, 31, was elected at the state's 1st Congressional District Convention to represent his party in the Electoral College. Rey competed against 21 others for the spot. He was the only black candidate.

"I don't think the historic nature of the presidential election got me elected to this position," Rey said. "Like anything in politics, I think I was at the right place at the right time."
