McCain won't endorse Palin

WASHINGTON, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., Sunday said he would not necessarily support his former running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, if she runs for president.

In an appearance on ABC's "This Week," McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, said he could not endorse Palin at this time.

"I can't say something like that," McCain said when asked if he would support her possible White House bid. "We've got some great other young governors. I think you're going to see the governors assume a greater leadership role in our Republican Party."

McCain mentioned two Republican governors -- Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and Jon Huntsman of Utah -- as possible presidential contenders in 2012.

He said Palin was a boost to his presidential campaign.

"I have the greatest of appreciation for Governor Palin and her family," McCain said. "It was a great joy to know them. She invigorated our campaign."
