Greek protesters set police HQ sit-ins

ATHENS, Greece, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Young Greek protesters say they are planning sit-ins in front of police headquarters across the country.

The students have called for the sit-ins Monday, 10 days after the police shooting death of a 15-year-old boy sparked nationwide riots in which at least 70 have been injured, stores and international businesses attacked and at least 280 people detained, CNN said.

Protesters say the sit-ins will take place in front of Greece's national police headquarters in Athens and in front of police precincts across the country, the U.S. broadcaster said.

Violence continued Saturday night, with youths throwing petrol bombs at banks and at the police station where the officer charged with the teenager's killing was based, the BBC reported. Police responded with tear gas.

Saturday's clashes appeared to pick up in intensity over those of the last few days, observers said.

Meanwhile, Greek Education Minister Evripides Stylianidis Sunday urged young protesters who wear masks to show their faces, the Athens News Agency reported.

"If you ask me what I have to say to those kids, the answer is the same one that a parent would give to his children; the same one that a conscientious teacher ... would offer to his pupils: Take off the hoods!" Stylianidis said in an interview published in the Sunday edition of an Athens daily. "Nobody has the right to keep your faces covered ... . Express yourselves freely and we will listen to you."
