Greek opposition leader calls for change

ATHENS, Greece, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Greek opposition leader George Papandreou Sunday reiterated his call for Greece to change course, blaming the government for recent riots.

The Athens News Agency reported Sunday that violent street protests in Athens and other parts of the country following the police killing of a teenager revealed the magnitude of the crisis enveloping the country.

The Greek government created a "state of corruption and incompetence," Papandreou told the national council of his party, PASOK.

"PASOK does not want to divide the country; now is not the time, amid the crisis we are experiencing, for blind policies or social polarization and conflicts. We want to unite the people and the progressive forces around the solutions we propose, from a radical program of changes in a national and social pact," he said.
