Iranian protesters target Israeli blockade

TEHRAN, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Thousands of demonstrators in Iran on Friday called for the end of blockade actions by Israel in the Gaza Strip.

Chanting "Death to Israel," demonstrators marched in Iranian cities in opposition of Israel's controversial actions in the troubled region such as placing an economic blockade on the area's Palestinian population, the Fars News Agency said.

The rallies in cities such as Tehran were accompanied by the release of a statement that criticized the lack of action on the part of the international community.

Press TV said the Gaza Strip is being governed by the Palestinian government of Hamas, which was elected through democratic elections.

The Islamist movement has been at odds with Israel as it doesn't officially recognize the country as a legitimate state.

Among those taking part in Friday's rally in Tehran were Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani.

Press TV said Ahmadinejad also condemned Israel's action in the Gaza Strip and accused the country of attempting to disrupt the region's upcoming election.
