Doctors: Baby Faith improving

LONDON, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Faith Williams, the survivor of conjoined twins born to a British couple, appears to be gaining strength after surgery, doctors said Friday.

Faith, 2 weeks old, was listed in critical but stable condition at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, The Telegraph reported. Doctors operated on her Wednesday in an effort to improve her blood circulation.

Hope Williams, her sister, died not long after an 11-hour operation to separate the twins. Doctors said that they usually try to delay separation surgery to give conjoined twins a chance to grow somewhat but were afraid the Williams twins might not survive.

Immediately after the operation, Faith was given a 50-50 chance of survival.

The twins were joined from breastbone to navel, sharing a liver and part of their intestines.

The parents, Aled and Laura Williams from Shrewsbury in Shropshire, were believed to be with their daughter Friday. Laura, 18, is the youngest woman to become the mother of conjoined twins.
