Poll: Ill. voters want governor to quit

CHICAGO, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- The majority of Illinois voters say embattled Gov. Rod Blagojevich should resign following his arrest this week on corruption charges, a poll indicates.

The poll by the Glengariff Group, Inc. of Chicago found that 70 percent of Illinois voters say Blagojevich should resign, compared to 25 percent of voters who say he should remain in office until he is found guilty. He is accused of trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama.

On whether Blagojevich should be ousted from office, 73 percent of respondents said they would support impeachment of the governor, while 14 percent said they would oppose forcing him from office.

"There are no bright spots for Governor Blagojevich in these numbers," said Richard Czuba, president of the Glengariff Group which conducted the survey. "Even 65 percent of Democratic voters support the impeachment of Governor Blagojevich with 48.4 percent of Democrats strongly supporting his impeachment."

The poll of 600 voters was conducted Tuesday and Wednesday. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
