Pa. teen charged in alleged school plot

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- A 15-year-old boy has been charged with allegedly planning a shooting spree at his high school in Pottstown, Pa., officials say.

The Philadelphia Inquirer said Thursday Richard Yanis was charged this week with criminal attempt to commit murder for his alleged plot to shoot several of his fellow students at Pottstown High School.

The teen was allegedly going to use three guns he was suspected of stealing from his father's gun locker in the shooting, authorities say.

School community relations director John Armato credited communication between police and school officials with thwarting the alleged plot.

"We were notified by police (on Nov. 11) that they received a report of guns being stolen from a house where the teenager lived," Armato said.

Authorities said school officials' implementation of locker and bag checks forced the teen to alter his alleged plans until next year.

Yanis was arrested last Thursday and will be tried as an adult, the Inquirer said.
