Report: Rosseau top Surgeon Gen. choice

CHICAGO, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Chicago neurosurgeon Gail Rosseau is being considered to be the next U.S. surgeon general, sources say.

Rosseau, 52, one of only 300 female neurosurgeons in the United States, was an early supporter of U.S. President-elect Barack Obama and is at the top of his list for the Surgeon General's post, sources told the Chicago Tribune.

The newspaper said Rosseau is chief of surgery at the Neurologic and Orthopedic Institute of Chicago as well as an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Rush University Medical Center, the teaching hospital on Chicago's West Side.

A resident of River Forest, Ill., she has two children and her husband is an orthopedic surgeon.

Rosseau told the Tribune that it was still "early in the (vetting) process," but added that she was delighted she is being considered, indicting she would be willing to serve Obama's administration in any way he feels that she could be of use.
