NEW YORK, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- U.S abortion foes say Planned Parenthood is flush with cash and shouldn't get taxpayer money while the economy is floundering.
The new lobbying tactic by conservative Christian groups focuses more on economic concerns than moral concerns, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.
Planned Parenthood gets about $335 million a year, a third of its budget, from local and state government grants and contracts for contraception, sex education and non-abortion-related care for poor women and teenagers.
Planned Parenthood also is the nation's largest abortion provider, and abortion foes have long argued that taxpayer dollars, therefore, subsidize abortion in Planned Parenthood clinics, the Journal reported.
Planned Parenthood argues its programs are critically needed as more people lose their jobs and health insurance. For that reason, Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, who says he opposes abortion but doesn't want to ban it, has pledged not to cut Planned Parenthood's funds in his state, the Journal reported.
