OLYMPIA, Wash., Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Nine Washington state troopers could face criminal charges for allegedly buying fraudulent university degrees to get higher pay.
State Patrol Capt. Jeff DeVere said that the troopers have been on paid leave since mid-October, the Seattle Times reported. The State Patrol is investigating the alleged phony degrees.
A routine review of personnel files that found degrees from institutions that could not be found on the Internet or the phone book triggered the investigation.
A county district attorney is also investigating the case and trying to determine whether to file criminal charges.
DeVere said that even if the nine are convicted a separate administrative action would be needed to terminate them.
In Washington state, patrol officers with two-year and graduate degrees earn 2 percent more, while a four-year college degree carries a 4 percent salary increase.
