MUNCIE, Ind., Dec. 7 (UPI) -- An Indiana woman has been charged with causing her 8-year-old daughter's death by failing to manage her diabetes.

Amber Sky Bertram, 29, was arrested Friday, The Muncie (Ind.) Star Press reported. Kaitlyn Mae Borson died the day after Thanksgiving, two days after she was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Carmel.

Police Sgt. Linda Cook said Bertram was charged with neglect of a dependent causing death.

Bertram allegedly failed to follow a court order to test her daughter's blood sugar levels four to six times a day and to give her the appropriate insulin, and did not get medical treatment quickly when her daughter's condition deteriorated.

Kaitlyn's death was "very much preventable," Cook said.

Child protective services closed an investigation into Kaitlyn's medical care in October, Cook added.

"The biggest thing is, the mom was with the child 24 hours a day, so I hold her responsible, but maybe other parts of the system failed her also," Cook said.
