Ghana votes for new president

ACCRA, Ghana, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Ghanaians went to the polls Sunday to elect members of Parliament and a successor to President John Kufuor.

Nana Akufo-Addo, who served as foreign minister under Kufuor, is the New Patriotic Party's contender, while John Atta Mills of the opposition National Democratic Congress is running for president for the third time, BBC reported.

Running for the Convention People's Party, which ushered in Ghana's independence, has drawn support from people disillusioned with the country's two main parties. Its candidate, Paa Kwesi Nduom, could siphon enough votes to prevent the leading candidates from achieving a first-round victory.

The African Union's chief election observer, Salim Ahmed Salim, said voting was going well and that the rest of Africa was watching the election closely, the British network reported.

"I have been traveling of late in many African countries and what people keep on saying is 'Ghana, please redeem our image, be the good example. Don't go the way Kenya went or Zimbabwe has gone and we count on you to do that,'" said Emmanuel Bombande, who works for the West Africa Network for Peace Building.
