MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- An Alberta Clipper brought cold, snow and icy roads from Minneapolis to Buffalo, N.Y., early Saturday.

The wintry weather was expected to move east toward the Atlantic, AccuWeather said.

Weather-related crashes killed at least three people in the Minneapolis area, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported. A driver was died early Saturday in a sport utility vehicle that skidded into a ditch.

A few hours earlier, the driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee and one of his passengers were killed when he rear-ended a car that had stopped on I-94. The driver of the other car was trying to assist another man who had skidded off the highway.

Troopers said the three cars involved were carrying a total of 10 people.

Up to 2 inches of snow fell around Minneapolis. In Indiana, drivers also had to cope with the first significant snow of the season.

"Less than a quarter inch of snow and we've had probably 40 crashes," Indiana State Police Sgt. Fred Warren, based the Indianapolis area, said at about 10 a.m. Saturday.

Up to 4 inches of snow fell in Buffalo, a city known for its heavy lake-effect storms.
