Missionaries accused of sedition in Gambia

BANJUL, Gambia, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Two British missionaries living in Gambia committed sedition by sending letters that criticized the government, police allege.

Police have accused David Fulton and his wife, Fiona, of inciting rebellion against the government through their writings to various groups and individuals, The Times of London said Friday.

The British couple, who had been living outside of the capital of Banjul, were arrested last Saturday and was granted bail of nearly $184,000.

But Kofi Mensah, a missionary colleague of the Fultons, said he has been unable to locate the 60-year-old and his 46-year-old wife.

"I am trying to find out where they are. I have heard nothing from them but think Fiona may be at the police headquarters," Mensah said.

The Daily Telegraph reported Fulton is being held at Mile Two prison near the capital while his wife is being held in a Banjul police station.

The British newspaper said the couple's 2-year-old adopted daughter, Elizabeth, is with her mother at the jail.
