Town indictment accuses Bush of war crimes

BRATTLEBORO, Vt., Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Leaders of Brattleboro, Vt., say they're serious about enforcing a measure calling for the impeachment of President George W. Bush.

The measure calls for the town's police to ""arrest and detain George Bush and (Vice President) Richard Cheney in Brattleboro if they are not duly impeached, and prosecute or extradite them," The Washington Times reported Thursday.

Rich Garant, a member of the Brattleboro's governing body who voted for the measure in January, said "a very factual case" could be made for the indictments.

Citing the detention of prisoners of war at the military penal facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the treatment of captives and wiretapping of U.S. citizens, Garant said, "No one should be above the law."

Still, if Bush comes to Vermont -- and so far he hasn't -- Garant said he realizes Bush's Secret Service detail is "not going to let him be arrested" if he visits Brattleboro.

Bush has been to 49 other states -- some multiple times, the Times reported. He's been asked to visit the Green Mountain State, but no travel plans have been made.

"I've heard some talk that he might be considering a trip here in the last couple of weeks of his presidency," said state Republican Party Chairman Rob Roper. "But we haven't been pushing one way or the other."
