NEW DELHI, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- The Indian navy and coast guard had no specific information that could have been used to prevent the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, the chief of staff says.
Adm. Suresh Mehta said the coast was being patrolled before the assault, Voice of America reports. Investigators believe the attackers used a hijacked trawler to get to the area and then landed in small boats.
Gujarat fishermen have told Indian news media they told authorities of their concern that the coast was vulnerable to attacks from Pakistan.
But Mehta said no one had specific intelligence.
"The information available should be actionable," he said. "It should have some specifics to it. Whatever actionable have come our way we have always taken action promptly."
Experts say India, with a coast almost 5,000 miles long, does not have the forces it needs to patrol it adequately while the 23 agencies involved make coordination impossible.
